Weekend Celebrating Palestinian Culture 20th – 22nd November
At the Melville Centre, 5 Pen-y-Pound, Abergavenny NP7 5UN
Three days of displays of Palestinian arts and crafts: traditional dresses, textiles, paintings, ceramics, olive wood products, cards, books, jewellery and Zaytoun produce. Some of it for sale. Great for ethical gift buying as the festive season approaches.
Friday 20th from 11.30am: Exhibition opens to the public. Come and learn about Palestinian crafts from staff from the Bristol Palestine Museum and browse for gifts.
Saturday 21st am and pm: The “Hands Up Project” will present their work through talk, film and hopefully a livestream with children from Gaza. For young people and adults alike.
In the evening, writer Sabrin Hasbun will be in conversation about her book, “Crossing” and about her family and Palestine. We will have copies of her book for sale.
Sunday 22nd: Tatreez Workshop with members of the Tatreez Collective. Learn the art of Tatreez embroidery. Although the rest of the exhibition is FREE, there is a £20 charge for this workshop.
Tatreez Workshop
Join us for a hands-on cultural embroidery workshop at The Melville Centre. Learn traditional cross-stitch techniques passed down through generations, connect with community, and explore the deep history and symbolism behind these beautiful geometric patterns.
All skill levels are welcome — no prior sewing experience is needed!
BRING YOUR OWN CLOTHING!
Instead of stitching on standard canvas, this unique workshop will teach you how to embellish your own belongings.
* What to bring: Please bring a plain textile item or an article of your own clothing (such as a denim jacket, tote bag, canvas pouch, or cotton shirt).
* What we provide: We will provide waste canvas, embroidery threads, and needles.
You will learn how to work a beautiful Tatreez motif directly onto your garment, removing the waste canvas at the end for a perfect, seamless finish!
